KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Mayor Sly James’ brother is a suspect in a weekend shooting at 45th and Prospect.
According to the police report, Mayor James’ brother got into a fight with his cousin. The two men were apparently at a funeral Saturday, went to a relative’s house afterwards in Raytown, and then ended up outside a barbershop at 45th and Prospect.
They reportedly got into a fight over a borrowed car. Police say the brother pulled out a gun and hit his cousin in the head with it, then fired two shots inside the victim’s car. He then threatened to shoot him again, but instead got into another car and left the scene.
The mayor was at a mayor’s conference in New York City this weekend and says he has been estranged from this part of his family for some time.
Police say the suspect will likely be charged with domestic assault.
The mayor’s office told FOX 4’s Eric Burke that violence, regardless of blood lines, needs to stop in Kansas City.
