LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — In February, Alyssa “Ally” Howe was at a friend’s house in Lee’s Summit when she was accidentally shot. Now, three months later, a fundraiser Thursday night will help raise money for future medical bills.
The shooting happened when Alyssa’s 15-year-old friend was taking a clip from her father’s nine millimeter handgun. The bullet hit Ally on the right side of her brain and lodged in the back of her head.
“I’ve been trying to have a good attitude through all of it to help me pull through,” said Alyssa.
Doctors feared Alyssa wouldn’t survive the emergency surgery that night, but just one month after she was shot, she started rehabilitation. She has lost hearing in her right ear, but doctors expect her to make a full recovery.
When asked if she thinks this is a miracle, Alyssa said, “Well sort of. All my friends were supporting me by praying.”
“God has his hands in this,” said Amy Howe, Alyssa’s mom.
Alyssa is still friends with the friend who shot her. The 15-year-old was charged in March with Third Degree Assault and will be in juvenile court.
“It was pretty hard, but I’m still really good friends with her. She just stayed the night last night,” Alyssa said.
Alyssa is happy to laugh again with her sister and friends and celebrate her recovery. The T-shirts and bracelets for sale at the fundraiser convey the common feeling of “Ally’s Awesomeness”.
“I’m excited that I’ll be able to hang out with my friends and be out later!”
