NEWTOWN, Conn. — Authorities say that 28 people — including 20 children — are dead following a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school on Friday, Dec. 14.
The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut — located around 60 miles northeast of New York City. Authorities say that six adults and 20 children were killed in the school. Another two children were rushed to a nearby hospital where they died of their wounds.
The shooter, identified by the Associated Press as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, was found dead in the school — reportedly of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to broadcast reports, the suspected gunman’s mother, identified as Nancy Lanza, was found dead at her home in Newtown. She was reportedly shot four times in the head and found in her bed.
Authorities say that the shootings at the school happened in two classrooms. According to CNN, authorities say that the shooter was wearing “black battle fatigues and a military vest.”
Law enforcement sources say that three weapons were found at the scene — including a .223 Bushmaster. The other weapons, previously reported, are a Glock, and a Sig-Sauer. There is no word on the model type of those weapons.

There were earlier broadcast reports of another body connected to the shooting found in a house in Hoboken, New Jersey. CNN reports that police now say that no body was found at that location. However, the shooter’s brother was seen being taken away for questioning from that house. He and other family members have been fully cooperative with police.

A third grader at Sandy Hook Elementary School described what she saw Friday morning to a CNN affiliate.
“We saw police officers and we heard them on the roof and in the building,” she said. She later added that she saw police officers outside the door “trying to find the guy.”
A nurse who rushed to the scene described what she saw to CNN, saying that a police officer told her that the scene inside the school as the worst he’d seen in his entire career.
