KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kansas law does not allow elections to be postponed due to bad weather, but it’s likely to cause many to stay home and election workers expect low turnout.

Still, they’re expected to be there, ready to help voters and accept their votes.

Because of the Monday afternoon-Tuesday storm, hundreds of voters waited in line at the Wyandotte County election office, trying to get their vote accomplished.

Wyandotte County voters are narrowing down the field for mayor from five candidates to two. They’re also voting on three unified government positions.

Workers are worried about getting to their polling places and election officials are bringing in cots for workers to use to sleep.

“We’re told that we have to do the election regardless of the weather,” said Bruce Newby Wyandotte Co Election Commissioner. “That involves trying to get our equipment and election workers to each one of the polling places.”

There are normally 30 polling places throughout Wyandotte County… but because of the weather, they’re cutting that down.
