OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A Blue Valley West High School graduate died in action in Afghanistan on Monday.
The Pentagon said 23-year-old Justin Lee Sisson’s unit was attacked by a suicide bomber, killing Sisson and one other soldier.
Friends say he had big blue eyes, a refreshing smile, and a heart as big as the Kansas sky.
“The all-American boy,” said longtime family friend Jennifer Ross.
Sisson’s family was notified on Monday, something Ross says no parent should have to hear.
“None of us ever expect for our children to die before we do,” Ross said.
But Ross says Sisson was doing what he loved.
He was a member of the ROTC program at Florida State University before graduating last May.
“It was his passion,” Ross said.
His friends say Sisson always knew he would follow in the footsteps of both of his grandfathers — fighting for the country they say he loved so much.
“He just loved his country and serving everyone here. He was just really passionate about what he did,” said Taylor Ross, who grew up with Sisson in Overland Park.
In Sisson’s death, friends say they want people to remember the freedoms we have because of those who serve.
“I think we need to remember everyday why we have the opportunity to live in this amazing country and to have the freedom that we do. If it weren’t for our military we would not be able to enjoy those things,” Ross said.
“Its heartbreaking hearing how much he loved his job and he had to give his life doing it,” said Taylor Ross.
Ross says Sisson’s parents will fly to Delaware to bring him home Thursday.
She says he will then be buried in Ft. Leavenworth next to both of his grandfathers.
