LEAWOOD, Kan. — Months after Frazier Cross allegedly opened fire and killed three people at the Jewish Community Center and nearby Village Shalom, plans to honor the victims were announced during a press conference on Wednesday.
Mindy Corporon said Wednesday was specifically picked because it was the same day the preliminary hearing against the alleged shooter was scheduled for. She said she knew there would be a lot of negativity surrounding the hearing so she wanted to redirect the energy to something positive.
Not only did she lose her son, Reat Underwood, but also her father, Dr. William Corporon, and her heart also aches for the third victim, Terri LaManno. She’s hoping that Wednesday’s announcement will be yet another thing that helps keep her strong amid so much loss.
“A lot of people are worried that I don’t cry. Believe me, I have my moments of tears, but right now I am so excited to spread our message and that keeps me going,” said Mindy Corporon.
It was announced that in April of 2015 the three victims are to be honored with a memorial walk, which will take place starting from the Jewish Community Center and will end at the Church of the Resurrection.
There will also be a celebration of life featuring an original song, which will be selected from a contest, where contestants aged 14 to 21 will have the opportunity to write that song based on cultural, religious and racial diversity and tolerance. There will be more details released about the contest in January.
