KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police have charged a woman with second degree murder and armed criminal action in connection to a fatal stabbing incident from May of this year.

According to court documents, shortly after 4 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, police received a phone call from a woman, later identified as 47-year-old Emma Jean Hyson, who told dispatch she had stabbed her boyfriend and he was dead. She further stated that she had been unconscious for hours and needed her boyfriend to “stop beating her.”

When officers arrived at Hyson’s residence, located at 115 NW Harlem Road, they located a male victim, who was later identified as 52-year-old Kenneth Wilcock, in the bedroom of the apartment who had died from an apparent stab wound to his neck. Hyson stated to police that during an altercation with Wilcock she had acted in self-defense and stabbed him before she passed out.

According to the probable cause statement, Hyson said she had been struck multiple times during an argument; however police said she didn’t appear to have any recent wounds. Police said Hyson later changed her story while being questioned.

Hyson is currently being held in police custody at Clay County Jail.

A second fatal stabbing occurred later on at the same address on Tuesday, June 23.
