KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Over 20 trained Red Cross disaster workers from the metro are now in the Gulf Coast region to help provide residents relief from Hurricane Isaac.

According to the Red Cross, over 5,200 people stayed in 80 Red Cross or community shelters across six states on Tuesday night, and more are expected on Wednesday night as Isaac continues to drop heavy rains and bring storm surges to low-lying areas along the Gulf Coast.

Nearly 2,700 Red Cross workers are in the region in total. The organization says that they already have trailers of relief supplies prepositioned in the area and has sent thousands of additional supplies like clean up and personal hygiene items, cots, blankets, coolers, shovels, rakes, tarps, gloves and masks.

In addition, they say that they have 311,000 ready-to-eat meals and kitchen support trailers in the area.
