KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For decades, Twinkies have been more than an American treat, they’ve been an American icon – but in this new Millennium, with the possible demise of Hostess, people fear Twinkies and other classic treats will be just a memory.

That fear caused a rush on Hostess Bakery stores around the country and in the metro.

“They’re going out of business so why not?” Cole Stevens said.

Many admit, they don’t even eat that many Hostess treats.

“I’ve only had Twinkies once before,” Stevens said.

Still, shoppers are shelling out the dough, and if your local store is all out, you may have to shell out even more online.

Ads for Twinkies, Zingers and Cupcakes are giving Ebay and Craiglist a sugar rush.  This picture from Kansas City on Craigslist shows a trunk full.  The price per box is 15-bucks.  On Ebay a single box of 10 Twinkies is advertised for 35 dollars!  One would assume some prices are exaggerated including a listing for 2.5 million dollars.  There’s also a listing for just two Twinkies “delicious mouth gold” for  200-thousand dollars.

It’s a hefty price for a piece of an iconic treat, that may be fading away, but like celebrities in the past, this one won’t go without its fair share of Facebook tributes and Twitter hashtags.
