WICHITA, Kan. — Friends of a Lee’s Summit man are mourning after a gunman shot and killed their long-time friend in Wichita, Kan., last Friday.
Zachary Hunt, 22, was gunned down Friday,, Nov. 30, around 8:10 p.m., at the Dollar General store where he worked. Another man, Hank Harvey, 79, was also shot and killed.
Police arrested Marquis Marshall, 19, who now faces murder charges in the shooting deaths of Hunt and Harvey.
Hunt grew up in Lee’s Summit, Mo., and graduated from Lee’s Summit High School four years ago where he played the trumpet in the high school band. Friends said Hunt moved to Wichita a few months ago to be near his mother. His high school buddy, Danny Merdian, said Hunt was “a big teddy bear with a huge heart.”
“He was really quiet,” Merdian said, “not the most outgoing guy in the world, but he really understood people.”
Hunt’s high school band teacher said Hunt was a nice guy.
“I never saw him be mean to anybody,” said Brady Finch, band director. “He was a very kind young man.”
Harvey, the other victim killed in the General Store, had reportedly gone to the store to buy candy for his grandchildren. Both Hunt and Harvey were shot and killed near the front door of the store. Police do not think any other customers were inside at the time, but two employees were in the rear of the store.
Police arrested Marshall on Sunday after alerting the public that he was armed and dangerous.
