KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One woman is dead after she was struck and killed in the southbound lanes of I-29 near 64th Street in Kansas City, Mo.
Sgt. Bill Mahoney with the Kansas City Missouri Police Department said shortly before 6 p.m., a motorist encountered a woman in the southbound lanes of traffic and struck her.
“She appears to have been killed instantly,” he said. “She was then struck by a second vehicle.”
Mahoney said both motorists pulled over and have been cooperating with police in the investigation. At this time no one knows why the woman was walking in traffic.
“It’s somewhat dark,” Mahoney said. “Speeds are, of course, somewhat high on an interstate highway. It’s a very dangerous place to be out on foot.”
At the time of the accident, Mahoney said there was mist in the air.
“That could have played a part,” he said. “It’s just, motorists aren’t expecting to see someone on foot on an interstate, so it’s a very dangerous situation.”
Police have not released the woman’s identity. No other information has been made available at this time.
