DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.– Jimmie Johnson put the petal to the metal literally — to edge out Dale Earnhardt, Jr. during the last lap of the 2013 Daytona 500 Sunday afternoon to take the wave of the checkered flag.

Earnhardt, Jr. finished second, running out of steam as he tried to get past Johnson on the last lap at the Daytona International Speedway.

Danica Patrick finished eighth after staying in the top-10 drivers all day.  She made history at the race becoming the first woman driver to lead a lap under green.

It occurred following a Lap 90 caution for debris.

A six-car wreck on Lap 32 knocked contenders Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne out of the race.

It was the 55th running of NASCAR’s biggest race, coming on the heels of the Nationwide Series race Saturday, in which a massive wreck sent car and tire parts into the grandstand area injuring 28 people.
