KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The youngest child hurt when an airport sign fell on his family has been released from a hospital.
The 300 pound Birmingham, Ala., airport sign killed his brother, 10-year-old Luke Bresette. His mother and another brother remain in the hospital.
“Disbelief. I could not believe something like this had happened — and it was more unreal. And it still is unreal to believe that it happened to Luke,” said Alex Bresette, Luke’s uncle.
Alex said Luke loved football, basketball and baseball — and he considered him an “All American” kid.
“I would like to see Luke remembered as a fun loving all american kid who took joy in making others smile,” he said. “He had a unique and profound connection with all four of his grandparents. Some kids as they grow up are too cool to hug, not Luke. He always gave hugs.”
As two of Luke’s brothers recover from injuries at a children’s hospital, they received a special visit from members of the National Champion University of Alabama football team. In Kansas City, classmates of Luke spent the day writing sympathy cards for the family.
Alex said the children’s mother, Heather, remained in serious condition with broken ankles and a crushed pelvis.
“Doctors are positive. She’s got a great family supporting her — from Ryan and her daughter, Hannah, especially — to her sons; her parents are with her. And heather is an incredibly strong woman. She is mentally tough, spiritually sound, just a role model for mothers everywhere.”
Alex called the accident “devastating” for the family and said his brother, Ryan, who was not hurt, described the scene as “chaotic.” He said is brother is getting a lot of help from relatives — and he needs it.
