INDEPENDENCE, Mo.– The annual basketball game between William Chrisman and Truman high schools had a different feel this year. Chrisman’s point guard Matthew Cepeda took the court as the newly award Missouri Special Olympics Athlete of the Year.
When he found out he won, Cepeda couldn’t hold back his emotions.
“I actually burst into tears, I was so excited and happy about it,” said Cepeda.
Matt received the award at the annual banquet in Branson Missouri. His coach and special olympics volunteer Kathy Lowry has been working with Matt for six years. She says his leadership is impressive.
“He’s a natural-born leader,” said Lowry. “He really enjoys helping and seeing his fellow athletes learn the sports that they are doing and growing in the process.”
Matt was nominated locally, but judging was done in another state.
