KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Police are investigating the death of a woman in Kansas City, Kan.

Police said the unidentified woman was found in a park at 7th and Osage around 3 p.m. on Friday. People said she had been laying in the park since about noon. Those who saw her thought she was sleeping.

“I’m just devastated,” said Charles Yarder who was eating his lunch at the park. “It just looked like she was laying there sleeping.”

Police said shortly before 3 p.m. some people playing basketball paused to check on the woman and discovered she was dead. That’s when they called 911.

Police said they do not suspect foul play and said heat may have been a factor. An autopsy is expected to be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

Police encourage everyone to take extra precautions during the heat and check on one another.

“Don’t always assume that in the heat or extreme temperatures that somebody’s sleeping,” said Lt. Kelli Bailiff with the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office. “Take that extra second if you’re walking around, go over and check on them. Every second is a great opportunity to save somebody’s life and we want that opportunity.”

Police are working to identify her as she did not have any identification on her. Police described her as a woman in her late 30s or early 40s wearing a white T-shirt, navy sweats and black shoes.
