KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City councilman has admitted to sexting a woman. The woman claims there’s a connection between her relationship with the married councilman and allegation of the misuse of $15,000 in city money.
According to reports, Councilman Michael Brooks made the admission about the relationship this week. He said the woman tried to blackmail him, but insists the relationship is not at all related to the $15,000 in taxpayer money, which was used to bring champion boxer Floyd Mayweather to Kansas City. It was paid to a promoter. However, when the boxer’s domestic violence record came to light, the event was canceled, but the money was never returned.
Now, an anonymous woman says she and Brooks had a sexually charged online relationship where he sent her nude pictures. At one point the woman says she reached out to those who knew the married councilman, hoping to learn more about him. Eventually, she and two other people used the relationship as leverage to blackmail Brooks.
“If we had all the information now or all the allegations coming forward now, we would have done due diligence on the front end and tried to make sure we protected the city,” said Kansas City City Manager Troy Shulte.
There is now an online petition circulating calling for the married minister and father of four to step down.
What is his future as a member of city council?
“That will be entirely his decision and the city council’s decision to make,” said Shulte. “Right now he’s still our fifth district city council member and I’m going to treat him as the representative of the 5th councilman district.”
We were unable to contact councilman Brooks attorney for comment.
The city previously turned the matter of the $15,000 over to police and Shulte says they’ll wait to and see where this goes.
