KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A five-run fourth inning was all the offense the Chicago White Sox needed to defeat the Royals on Wednesday night. The White Sox won 5-2, further damaging the Royals’ playoff chances as they have now lost four straight games and seven of the last nine.

The White Sox big inning was highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Dayan Viciedo. It was Vicideo’s second career grand slam, a towering shot that landed in the left-centerfield fountain area. The Royals scratched runs across in the fourth and sixth innings, but were held at bay by White Sox starter Andre Rienzo, who got his first career win.

The Royals will look to get back on the winning track when they send James Shields to the mound on Thursday night. He’ll be opposed by Jose Quintana. The Royals have seen Quintana three times this season, winning two of those games despite Quintana pitching well in all three.

Shields will be working off back-to-back quality starts, both wins.  He’s only given up two earned runs in the last 14 innings he’s pitched, which is impressive considering the games were against Boston and Detroit, two of Major League Baseball’s most prolific lineups.
