KANSAS CITY, Mo. — They’re wild. They’re crazy and some of them can even fly.
Each year, teams of people from across the country attempt to fly home-made aircraft in an event that’s turned more slapstick that an aviation competition. However, a group of guys known as Team Connie from the Kansas City’s National Airline History Museum hopes to change all that.
They’ll be heading to Chicago this weekend for the Red Bull Flugtag Competition where they hope to bring home bragging rights by taking 1st place in the annual glider competition.
The museum has launched a year-long campaign to raise $3.2 million to restore and fly its Lockeed Constellation known as Connie on a special commemorative flight.
The Connie is set to take flight on April 17th 2014 the 70th anniversary of the 1944 inaugural flight piloted by Howard Hughes and TWA President and co-founder Jack Frye.
When the Connie was built it became Trans World Airlines’s (TWA) most famous airliner and a regular at the downtown airport the Fairfax Airport and KCI.
