KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The night before Thanksgiving is a big night for celebrating, and that means a greater effort will be put into place to monitor for drunk drivers. And for the average adult, two drinks in one hour are all it takes to reach the legal limit.

Kelly’s Westport Inn, an Irish pub in the heart of Westport, is gearing up for the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving eve. Colleen Kelly, who co-owns her family’s business, says she wants people to have fun, but she also wants people to be safe.

“The excitement is definitely up and people also know the next day they can sleep in and they have a big hung-over feast to enjoy,” said Kelly.

Scott Patschke, who owns a local company called Drive Me Driving Service, offers rides home to intoxicated drivers in their own cars.

“Some of these people really, really need our service.  Often even before we get out of the parking lot they’re fast asleep,” said Patschke, who is offering free rides home from 5:30 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. the night before Thanksgiving.

To use the service, a person must go online and request a ride. A team member from the service will then meet that person and drive them home in their own car. Then the ‘Drive Me’ driver will be picked up by another team member.

“With all the sobriety checkpoints, I hear a DUI can cost up to $10,000. Not mentioning loss of jobs, even loss of life or injuries,” said Patschke, who said the high price is not worth paying.
