KANSAS CITY — As some MoDOT contractors were making repairs near I-70, they told police that shots were fired their way. Police say it happened along I-70, near Pittman Road. Workers say they were fixing a fence Thursday afternoon, when they heard a popping sound.
One of the workers told police it sounded like tree bark being hit and then eventually he heard what sounded like the metal fence being hit. The workers feared they were in someone’s line of fire, but police say it’s still uncertain if the noise was from actual gunshots.
MoDOT said there was a separate crew in the area picking up litter and heard what sounded like gunshots, too. Workers think about 30-to-40 rounds were fired, possibly from a 22-caliber gun.
“Safety is the number one priority for MoDOT and our crews, our equipment and the traveling public as well. So at that point we decided we better get our crews out of there and the contractor crews out of there to get them to safety,” MoDOT Assistant District Engineer Randy Hartman said.
Police canvassed a nearby apartment complex, and didn’t locate anyone who heard the shots. We talked to a neighbor who said it’s not uncommon to hear shots fired in this area. Last month police responded to another shooting at this same apartment complex.
