DETROIT, Mich. — A Michigan woman faces murder charges in connection to the death of her newborn son, whose body was found stuffed in her desk drawer at work.
According to WDIV-TV in Detroit, 25-year-old Kimberly Pappas has been charged with felony murder, first-degree premeditated murder and first-degree child abuse after she allegedly gave birth to a full-term baby boy on March 31 in the restroom of the suburban Detroit business where she worked.
Prosecutors say that Pappas cut the umbilical cord and put the baby and placenta in a plastic bag, which she then stuffed in her desk drawer. Police and emergency crews were called to the business after Pappas’ coworkers found the restroom covered in blood.
“The baby was still warm when rescue personnel found him,” Redford Township Police Detective Kevin Crittenden told WDIV.
Pappas and the child were taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Pappas claimed that she had a miscarriage, but medical examiners later ruled that the child was born alive and died of asphyxiation.
Pappas was denied bond, WDIV reports. She is due back in court on June 8.
