KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jeremy Guthrie made a home run appearance at the Ronald McDonald House on Sunday. He visited and played catch with one lucky fan.
Josh Oakley, 18, grew up playing baseball. He pitched in high school and hoped to get a college scholarship, but one day last season he got fatigued while playing. Doctors discovered he had an enlarged heart.
Oakley was fortunate enough to get a heart transplant in October. It was a frightening journey, but there were no worries on Sunday. It was just a fun, memorable day with a major league for Oakley.
“It’s just something I’ve always wanted to do, is like meet some MLB players and this is definitely something that’s going to be really cool,” Oakley said.
Guthrie also gave the baseball fan some Royals gear: a game-worn cap and a t-shirt from the Royals’ celebration after winning the pennant.
Oakley said he hopes to be ready for baseball season in the spring.
