KANSAS CITY, MO. — The Kansas City Royals are calling on fans to vote for reliever Jonathon Broxton in the 2012 Major League All-Star Game Final Vote contest, the team said on Monday.
The Royals pitcher is one of five American League players vying for the final roster spot on the A.L. All-Star team, which will face off against the National League All-Stars at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday, July 10.
The right-handed Broxton has a 1-1 record with a 2.05 ERA and 20 saves, fourth-most in the American League. The 2012 campaign marks his third career 20-save season (2009 and 2010). Broxton leads the A.L. with 19 saves since April 26 and recorded his 100th career save on June 15 at St. Louis, becoming the 21st active pitcher with at least 100 saves and the second Royal (injured reliever Joakim Soria has 160 career saves).
According to the Royals, fans can visit http://www.royals.com/votebroxton to place their vote for Broxton and receive a 50% OFF discount in the Hy-Vee Infield seating sections for any Sunday-Thursday home game for the remainder of the 2012 season.
In addition to the web, fans can use their mobile phones to cast votes via the mobile web at MLB.com/vote or via text message. Vote for Broxton on your mobile device by texting A1 to 89269. Message and data rates may apply.
In addition, the Royals announced that they have joined forces with the Atlanta Braves in an All-Star Game Final Vote push. Royals fans are encouraged to vote for third baseman Chipper Jones and outfielder Michael Bourn to fill the remaining National League roster spot with an Atlanta Brave by visiting www.mlb.com/vote.
Jones, a seven-time All-Star who has announced plans to retire following the 2012 season, has played in every Major League city during his long career except for Kansas City.
Bourn, a speedy outfielder in his first full season with the Braves, won consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Awards in 2009 and 2010 and represented the Houston Astros as a National League All-Star in 2010. He has also led the N.L. in stolen bases in each of the last three seasons.
In return, Braves fans are encouraged to vote for Broxton, a Georgia native.
The winner, chosen exclusively by online fan voting totals, will be announced on MLB.com shortly after voting concludes on Thursday, the team said in a statement.
