Al Wallace joined FOX 4’s sports department in May 1985, and just celebrated his Silver Anniversary with WDAF, Kansas City’s oldest television station. He anchors sports on Sunday through Friday evening, reporting on sports news for Kansas City’s oldest television station. His broadcasting roots started in 1978, when he began working in production at KAMC-TV in Lubbock, Texas, where he eventually became sports director. He has also been weekend sports anchor and executive sports producer for KXAS-TV in Dallas, Texas and KVBC-TV in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Al has covered the World Series, seven NCAA Final Fours, training camps for both the Chiefs and Royals, the development and opening of the new Kansas Speedway, and the early development and construction of the new Sprint Center in Kansas City. Al also does annual contributor to the NFL Network’s coverage of the NFL Draft.
Al has also worked with KPRS radio in Kansas City, the oldest Black Owned and Operated radio station in the country. He has been the host of both the late Derrick Thomas’ “3rd & Long” radio program and “The Chief’s Hour” on KPRS. Other co-hosts of the program have included Neil Smith, Eddie Kennison, and most recently Derrick Johnson.
Al has also worked as a studio host and field anchor for ESPN ‘s coverage of Big 12 basketball, and is among 1,000 voters nationally who annually select the John Wooden Award winner, which goes to the top college basketball player in America.
Al graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications. In March of 1998, the Kansas City Globe honored Al as one of the “Most Influential African Americans” in Kansas City.
He is a history buff and enjoys collecting information on the assassination of J.F.K., Pearl Harbor and the sinking of the Titanic. He has also been a member of FOX 4 Chief Meteorologist Mike Thompson’s BBQ team, which has competed in both the American Royal BBQ and the Great American BBQ in Kansas City.
Al grew up in a military family and has lived in such cities as Washington, D.C.; Darmstadt, Germany; El Paso, Texas; and Mineral Wells, Texas. Al lives in Overland Park, Kansas with his wife, Marlena, and their two daughters, Chase and Chaney.
