KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Missouri School District is working to improve early learning. The district presented a set of strategies to the school board Wednesday night. Their main goal: get more students into early-learning programs because they work.
The district told the school board it wants about 6,000 children in programs like headstart by 2015. Currently, the district says there are just 1,000 kids enrolled.
The Office of Early Learning Director Jerry Kitzi said he first wants to strengthen existing programs and then launch an early learning community school in the northeast where, he says, most of the growth is happening. Kitzi admits funding is a problem but points to the Governor’s State of the Union Address when he said he wants to restore some of that funding, which could bring resources back to Kansas City.
