Pour 1 1/4 cup boiling water over 1 cup oatmeal and let stand 10 minutes.
Cream together 1/2 cup shortening, 1 cup white sugar, 1 cup brown sugar
And 2 eggs and beat.
And oatmeal mixture and these sifted ingredients:
1 1/3 cup flour
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
Add 1 tsp vanilla and beat.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 35 minutes in a 13 x 9 1/2 pan.
Icing:
As soon as cake is out of the oven, spread on the following mixture andp lace under the broiler until bubbly:
6 TBsp. melted butter
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 cup coconut
1/4 cup cream or canned milk (Carnation)
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup nuts (optional)
