SHAWNEE, Kan. — Johnson County prosecutors charged a 14-year-old boy on Wednesday with premeditated first-degree murder. They allege that he shot and killed his father Tuesday afternoon in Shawnee.
Police have identified the victim as Darren E. Gay, 46, of Kansas City, Kan. Police said the shooting happened around 3 p.m. at the Lindsay Auction Service, 4795 Frisbie.
According to police, the boy was in the middle of a custody exchange between his mother and father. When he walked to get inside his father’s car he fatally shot him.
“We don’t know a motive,” said Maj. Bill Hisle of the Shawnee Police Department. “We don’t know why this happened. Obviously this is very early on in this investigation. There are a lot of unanswered questions at this point.”
The boy’s stepfather called 911 after the shooting. The Auction Service was reportedly the family’s usual place to meet for custody exchange. The owner of Lindsay Auction Service did not want to go on camera about what happened at his business, but others were troubled.
“It’s kind of shocking. I mean especially how a boy would kill his own father,” said one man FOX 4 talked to near the scene.
Police did recover the gun used to kill the man.
The boy is expected to be in court on Friday afternoon.
