LAWRENCE, Kan. – Deputies are investigating the cause of a single car rollover crash involving two adults and three children just west of Lawrence in Douglas County.
According to Lt. Steve Lewis of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday a single crossover SUV with five passengers, left the roadway, rolled several times then went through a barbed-wire fence for unknown reasons in the 600 block of 40 Highway. As a result the highway was shut down between 1029 Road and Stull Road but reopened shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Ebony Boykins, 24, of Topeka, was ejected from the vehicle and life-flighted to the University of Kansas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The second adult passenger, 25-year-old Marcus Love, who was also ejected from the vehicle, was taken by ambulance to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center with serious injuries. As of Wednesday morning, Boykins was listed in critical condition and Love was listed in fair condition.
Deputies said the three children, also from Topeka who were in the vehicle, were all under the age of five; possibly one, two and three years of age. They received only minor or no injuries and were also taken to Stormont-Vail, but only as a precaution, then released to family members later Tuesday evening.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
