A Little Snow Can Cause a Lot of Problems on the Road

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A dusting of snow doesn’t seem like it should be enough to cause major chaos on the streets, but a new video released by the Overland Park Police Department shows that drivers should never underestimate the power in even the tiniest amount of snow.

The video released on Thursday shows a compilation of wrecks from the metro’s first dusting of snow on December 6th, when Overland Park Police responded to a massive number of wrecks – far more than you might expect from just a light dusting of snow.

“Take into consideration that those flurries can actually start to stick to the road a little bit. Stuff may melt, it may refreeze,” said Officer Michelle Koos of the OPPD. She says that on Wednesday night, officers responded to 24 weather-related wrecks. But on December 6th, that number was far worse.

“The last weather event we had in December we had about twice as many (wrecks as Wednesday night). So hopefully drivers are seeming to understand and make adjustments accordingly,” said Koos.

Regardless of how much, or how little, snow falls, officers want to remind drivers to slow down and put more distance between you and other cars.
