LAWRENCE, Kan. — The final Border Showdown ended in overtime on Saturday. An alumnus and artist captured the moment that will go down in Border History.
The battle between KU and MU will bring an end to a rocky relationship that no one loves except to hate. The Border Battle will never be forgotten in the record books and through the eyes of an artist who was on the court to capture the ending on canvas. That canvas will eventually hang in the halls of Allen Field House.
“I kind of want to encapsulate the moment,” said artist and alumni John Bukaty.
Bukaty understand what the moment means to fans on both sides of the border.
“I’m not a stranger to Allen Field House but everything I walk in here I get chills,” Bukaty said.
He normally paints music events but when KU officials asked him to use his career and canvas he couldn’t say no.
“I can be one little piece of history so it means a lot to me,” he said.
Despite the large crowd and all of the noise, Bukaty says he was not concerned about concentrating.
“I get hyper focused when everything is going chaos I do well in chaotic situations I guess,” he said.
Bukaty captured the historic moment to a rivalry 104 years in the making.
