JACKSON COUNTY, Mo. – It’s the first day of summer and the metro is already enveloped in heat. As many people look for an oasis at a pool or a lake, it’s important to be mindful of water safety. Last week at Longview Lake a swimmer drowned.
It’s important to be mindful of the basic tips like: Never swim alone and always have floatation devices. Sgt. Andy Bell with the Missouri Highway Patrol said to take those tips a step further.
“When you’re swimming make sure you have people qualified to observe you all the time. Make sure they are a swimmer themselves so they can come get to you with a flotation device,” Bell said.
Another person FOX 4 talked to also preached power in numbers when boating on the lake.
“On the water we try to come out in groups of three, so that if someone is in the water we can have someone driving the boat and somebody spotting, especially with little kids behind the boat that’s real important,” Troy Gable said.
The sun is expected to be out in full force this weekend with hot temperatures and gusty wind, stay up to date with FOX 4 Weather for the full details.
