OLATHE, Kan. — One year after the Boston Marathon bombing, an American crossed the finish line first in the 2014 race. Friday afternoon, he stopped by one of his sponsors, Garmin International, to tell the tale and explain what Boston Strong means to him.
Meb Keflezighi is an Olympian. He’s also won the New York City Marathon. But be said winning the Boston Marathon was the biggest triumph, not only for him, but for America.
“On the road, it had paint that said ‘Boston Strong.’ Boston Strong means resilient, don’t give up, and get to the finish line,” he said.
Besides a decorated marathoner and Olympic silver medalist, Keflezighi is a funny man. His charm won over the crowd at Garmin International.
It’s that same kind of energy that fueled Keflezighi to the finish line.
“Go USA ,Go USA, Go Meb Go Meb. I only knew I had it when I made that Boylston Street turn,” Keflezighi remembered.
He cheered from the sidelines last year, when the bomb exploded and killed four. That’s when the 40-year-old decided to run in 2014, a decision that turned out to be triumphant in more ways than one.
