KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Did a camera catch you running a red light in the metro? A class action lawsuit against the camera operator has settled and notices are going out, meaning you can get part of the fine back.

If you’ve paid a red light camera fine in the Kansas City area since 2009, you can now apply for a partial refund.

It all stems from a class action lawsuit filed in St. Louis against American Traffic Solutions and various Missouri cities that used its red light cameras.

Under the proposed settlement, drivers would receive a 20 percent refund of their fine. It’s estimated 900,000 postcards went out. About 200,000 in the KC area will be getting a postcard.

It directs you to a website where you enter your “pin” number to apply for your refund.

Annthia Thompson got two tickets in the mail in the past three years.

“I was pretty mad when I had to pay it. If it was unjust to begin with I should be entitled to a full refund. That’s my opinion,” Thompson said.

While she could opt out and sue on her own, Annthia says she’ll apply for the refund. A hearing to finalize the settlement is set for March. You have until February 28th to file for a refund.

In the meantime the Missouri Supreme Court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of red-light cameras in a separate case that wouldn’t impact the settlement.
