JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — A one car accident early Wednesday evening virtually shutdown Interstate 435.

Nine people were hurt in the crash, including seven children. The injuries are considered serious, but officials do not believe any injuries to be life-threatening.

Police say the children were ejected from the car and were all taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

The accident happened after a Ford Explorer flipped around 103rd Street on westbound I-435.

The SUV only holds five people, despite nine people being inside.

Initial reports from police indicate tire failure may be to blame for the crash. However, the accident remains under investigation.

Names have not yet been released, however, it’s believed that some of the people inside the SUV are related.
