GLADSTONE, Mo. — A man was discovered dead outside a burning house in Gladstone early Tuesday morning, but investigators say it does not appear the man died as a result of the fire.

Fire crews were called out to the 5800 block of North Howard at about 6:15 a.m.

As firefighters were working to contain the fire, the man’s body was located in the backyard of the residence.  While they still await results from the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office, they believe the man died from self-inflicted wounds.

While FOX 4’s Matt Stewart was at the scene, he talked to a friend of the victim. The friend said the victim was a 53-year-old man, who had moved into his mother’s house when she died.

Firefighters had not released the cause of the fire..
