KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The homicide unit is busy this morning gathering evidence and talking to witnesses, trying to find the suspects in three homicides from last night.
The homicides happened south of the river. Two at St. John and North Denver in the Northeast neighborhood, the third at 36th and Highland, right off 71 Highway.
The latest homicide happened right before 10 p.m. Monday. Someone called paramedics after a man was found on a porch at 36th and Highland with severe head injuries. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Earlier in the night — around 7:45 — two men were killed near near Budd Park. Someone saw a man slumped over inside a car and called police. When officers arrived, they found one victim in the front seat, the other in the back seat.
Both had been shot.
Detectives are looking at surveillance video from nearby businesses to try and identify the suspect, who witnesses saw walking away.
“Our gang unit works this area really hard,” said Darin Sapp, Kansas City police. “And the officers here know — they patrol this area whenever they are not on call. So yes, we get a lot of calls in this area. Like I said, that’s why the officers concentrate. Plus with the beaituful night out, there’s a lot of people out and about tonight. So we are hoping there are several witnesses that also observed the suspects leave because right now all we have is someone called and said they saw someone lying in the vehicle with no signs of life and that’s when we showed up. We are now trying to peice this together.”
This marks 11 homicides in Kansas City this year, more at this date than in any of the past five.
