STANTON, Kan. – An out-of-control Miami County teen was shot and injured by sheriff’s deputies after allegedly charging at them with a baseball bat on Friday afternoon, authorities said.
According to Miami County Undersheriff Wayne Minkley, the 15-year-old boy – described as mentally challenged – had attacked and injured his father at the family’s home in the small town of Stanton. When deputies arrived at the home, the teen threw a pick-ax at the officers, then charged at them with a baseball bat.
Authorities say that they tried using a stun gun on the teen, but when that didn’t work, deputies shot the teen in the leg.
“The family is cooperative. They’re assisting in the investigation. The 15-year old has the mental capacity of a 4-5 year old, I’ve been told,” said Minkley.
The teen, whose name has not been released, was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City with what are described as non-life threatening injuries.
As per standard procedure, the deputy who shot the teen has been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.
