OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — It’s been a long time coming for teachers in the Shawnee Mission School District. This fall they will see their first pay increase in four years.
The board of education on Monday night signed off on a 3.25 percent increase for the base salaries of its 2,100 teachers across the district. That equates to $1,316 more a year for beginning teachers and $2,510 more for experienced teachers who hold doctorate degrees.
“I think this is really important for our teachers because from the district standpoint, certainly we want to be able to recruit and retain high quality teachers in the classroom,” said Leigh Anne Neal, the district’s spokeswoman.
The National Education Association of Shawnee Mission must now ratify the new contracts before the deal is final.
Meanwhile, Blue Valley teachers will also vote on a new deal approved by their school board Monday night featuring a two percent pay hike and three percent one-time payment increase for next year.
