“Guardians” worth watching over? “Dolphin Tale 2” fishy? Home Video Popcorn Bag reviews!

RUSS:
The biggest box office hit of the year features a talking raccoon and a tree that sounds like Vin Diesel. Yes, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is an odd comic book adaptation, but its idiosyncrasy a part of its considerable charm.

Writer-director James Gunn’s irreverent attitude fits the material like a glove. Think “Men in Black” meets “Howard the Duck ” and you’ll get the feel. Zippy and engaging, “Guardians of the Galaxy” hits the comic book bullseye. Look for “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” to hit theaters in 2017.

SHAWN says: A wild ride that’s completely entertaining and fun. The closest thing to the spirit of the original Star Wars since Star Wars.

2) DOLPHIN TALE 2 (PG)

“Dolphin Tale 2,” a sequel to the popular 2011 family flick which was inspired by the true story of a injured dolphin that rescuers fitted with a prosthetic tail.

All of the original cast members return for the continuing story of the bottle-nosed dolphin named Winter. The filmmakers work hard to find some drama in a very spare story and you don’t have to be clairvoyant to figure out how it’s all going to turn out. Still, “Dolphin Tale 2” is a sweet natured movie that should have a broad appeal for animal lovers, their kids and grandkids.

SHAWN says: Mediocre family entertainment. Neither good nor bad just sort of bland.

3) WHEN THE GAME STANDS TALL (PG)
Sony Pictures

RUSS:
High school football coach Bob Ladouceur (LAD-a-sur) guided Concord, California’s De La Salle Trojans to a national record 151-game winning streak from 1992 to 2003. But the inspirational sports flick, “When the Game Stands Tall,” concentrates on what happened after the streak was broken.

While loaded with sports movie clichés, the film is earnest and proudly wears its Christian heart on its sleeve. It’s a well-made, faith-based drama.

SHAWN says: A glum non-cheery sports drama. Overly serious and way too slow.
