WICHITA, Kan. — The new summer blockbuster superman movie, “Man of Steel,” may be a hit at the box office, but the National Weather Service is giving at least one scene a thumbs down. The scene is of a tornado and shows Clark Kent’s father urging people to take cover under an overpass. That contradicts what the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration puts out about tornado safety. In fact an overpass is the worst place to go.
“Seeking shelter under an overpass puts you at greater risk of being killed or seriously injured by flying debris, from the powerful tornadic winds,” said a national weather expert.
Warner Brothers released a statement saying the film is fiction and not meant to give emergency preparedness advice. The National Weather service says people should have an emergency plan if they have to be on the road during a tornado threat, but go for a ditch or shelter instead of an overpass.
