KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Fallen firefighter Larry Leggio will be laid to rest Monday following a procession.
In the last week food and flowers have been dropped off at Station 17, where firefighter Larry Leggio worked for 17 years.
On Monday his loved ones will walk the route from the station to Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends and family say it’s a way to celebrate the lives of Leggio and John Mesh and the sacrifices they made in the community.
The four-mile procession will start at St. Patrick Parish around 12:30 p.m., and will pass by several fire stations including stations #23, #18 and #17 before ending at the cemetery where a burial service will take place starting at 1:30 p.m. The public is allowed to stand along the route to pay their respects. Drivers are asked to avoid 71 Highway from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. because a majority of the highway will be closed.

Over the weekend a memorial service was held at Sprint Center and brought together hundreds of firefighters from across the country. Thousands of people filled the audience and watched as family members were presented medals and folder flags.
“Our families will find strength knowing that these brave men died saving others,” John Mesh’s niece, Giovanna Caponetto, said. “We love you both and we will never ever forget.”
Leggio’s brother added that the two men may be gone, but they will never be forgotten.
Instead of flowers, Leggio’s family asks that people donate to the families of fallen firefighters.
The visitation for Mesh will be on Tuesday at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Independence. His funeral is Wednesday morning.
