KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Saturday morning hundreds of people gathered to watch as thousands of runners weaved their way throughout the city for the Kansas City Marathon.
One group in particular tailgated the event while cheering on participants. Cheesy bacon breakfast burritos, Bundt cakes and mimosas included.
“Just like any good Kansas City person, obviously it’s a sporting event so we’ve got to tailgate it,” said Joe Giammanco, a tailgate organizer who has been at the event for three years in a row.
On Saturday, Giammanco along with his friends and neighbors set up their tailgate between the 15 and 16 mile markers near 70th Terrace and Ward Parkway while they waited for runners to pass and offered them encouragement during the run.
“We got your high five aid station here! You need a high five? We got one! Energizing high fives,” he said.
Although some runners seemed to tune the group out, others got in the spirit and took it all in.
Giammanco said he and his friends plan to come back next year and encourages anyone to stop by their spot whether they are running or not.
