KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Neither a fire at a high-rise apartment on the Plaza and another fire at a furniture store in Liberty on Sunday resulted in human casualties, and for that firefighters are grateful.
In Liberty, the fire did badly damage a well-known furniture store there. Crowley Furniture, 200 N 291 Hwy.
Much of the contents and the building were destroyed by the fire or the water. The fire was brought under control at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
The state fire marshal will determine the cause. No one was hurt.
On the Plaza, a high-rise apartment building was evacuated as soon as firefighters arrived and saw the smoke.
The fire started on the eighth floor when someone left while there was still food cooking on the stove.
Firefighters had to kick in the door to get to it. They say someone had also parked in front of the closest fire hydrant.
“It blocked our access to the hydrant which was right across from the residence. We would’ve had to push it out of the way or cut it up. Basically the car was right in front of it and made the hydrant inoperable,” said Chief John Baker, KCMO Fire Dept.
No injuries were reported in this fire either.
