FORT RILEY, Kan. — A U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Riley has been charged with murder in connection to the May death of a fellow soldier.
According to Fort Riley officials, Pvt. John Hughes, a wheeled vehicle mechanic with Special Troops Battalion, 1st Sustainment Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, has been charged with the murder of 21-year-old Pvt. Thomas Lavrey. He also faces charges of resisting arrest and larceny in connection to the case.
Officials say that Lavrey was found unresponsive in his living quarters at Fort Riley on May 14th, and was pronounced dead at Irwin Army Community Hospital. His cause of death has not been released.
According to the Army, Lavrey and Hughes were assigned to the same unit.
The incident is still under investigation.
