KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Officers involved in a drug bust are crediting a four-legged member of the force named Dax. Kansas State Highway Patrol said one of its troopers pulled over a car carrying a U-Haul Monday night for making an illegal lane change. When the two people inside started acting suspicious, the trooper called for backup.
That’s when The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department sent out its K-9 Dax.
“We are with these dogs 24 hours a day,” said Dax’s handler, Officer Mark Wilcox. “They stay with us, the best partner you can ever have.”
Wilcox said Dax quickly alerted him of his find once inside the U-haul.
“I guess he smelled the marijuana inside those containers and he went to sit position, and then he laid down on the top of the containers,” he said.
Wilcox said Dax is still a puppy and has only been working on the force for five months. He said this is the dog’s biggest drug bust yet.
“He knows when it’s time to work and when it’s time to play,” Wilcox said. “I didn’t even know what was in those containers because they were welded shut and we couldn’t smell it.”
Dax spent a month training for his job in Texas and has already made several drug finds since working in Kansas City, such as cocaine, meth and heroin. Wilcox said Dax has also tracked down two suspects who ran from police and were hiding.
“When I open the car door he will run to the door and jump in, he loves to work.” Wilcox told FOX 4.
A Kansas State Trooper said because the investigation is still open they cannot release where the drugs originated from or where they were headed to.
