TOPEKA, Kan. — In 2003, FOX 4 aired a special report on Fred Phelps, the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, who died on Thursday in hospice care.

Phelps’ church is best known for its belief that deaths of U.S. military personnel were God’s punishment for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality.

Eleven years ago, FOX 4 reporter and now current Royals Vice President-Community Affairs & Publicity Toby Cook talked to Phelps about his philosophy and his finances.
