LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. – A Bernard Campbell Middle School girl remains in the hospital Wednesday, recovering from accidentally being shot in the head last Friday. Her friends tell FOX 4, they are emotionally drained, but that will not stop them from helping their friend out.
The victim’s friends identify her as Alyssa Howe. They huddled together in front of Abundant Life Baptist Church’s youth center to pray for her.
“I just couldn’t believe it was happening to her and I didn’t think it was fair that it was happening to her because she deserves the least out of anyone,” said Kayla Bock, one of Alyssa’s best friends.
Alyssa’s friends say they couldn’t sit back and do nothing. Since the incident on Friday, they have been making cards for Alyssa. By the time Wednesday came, they had made about 150 white T-shirts. It has Alyssa’s picture, and a quote from her Facebook page on it in purple, which is Alyssa’s favorite color.
“The hashtag, pray for Alyssa, was all over Twitter, so we thought we’d put that in there too,” said J.P. Quinn, who helped get the shirts made.
Teen Accidentally Shot in Lee’s Summit
The group is selling the shirts for $10 each. They say they want to help with the family’s medical bills, since Alyssa is still in the hospital.
A Lee’s Summit police spokesperson said Alyssa remains in serious but stable condition Wednesday.
“Over the years, we’ve like, fell in love with the family of course because we spend so much time with them and it just kind of hurts to see them go through this and we just kind of want to help out,” said Sydney Cereceres, one of Alyssa’s best friends.
Even those who didn’t know Alyssa well, came and bought.
“I think it’s really cool how Lee’s Summit is coming together as a family and supporting her,” said Taylor Perdue, who knew Alyssa through church.
Alyssa’s friends say they’ll keep up the support, and prayer until she comes home.
The group raised about $1,500 Wednesday. They said they plan on selling shirts again at the church again on Friday. They say the two other middle schools will sell them at some capacity too. The group is planning a fundraiser on March 3 at Minsky’s pizza in Lee’s Summit. They say they are also hoping to set up a fund at a bank.
Alyssa’s friends say there is a Facebook page for those interested in checking in on her status.
