KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A family’s dog is dead following a fire that some believe was intentionally set. The home that caught fire was a nearly, brand new Habitat for Humanity home. A single mother and her two daughters, who are 12 and four years old, lived in the home.
The victim’s sister said she believes her sister’s boyfriend set the house on fire after the two reportedly had an argument, during which, she says, he threatened to set the house on fire. Police said while the fire is being investigated as arson, they have no suspects named.
The victim’s sister says she’s happy her sister and nieces are okay but now they’re left to wonder if they’re safe and where they’re going to live. It’s estimated the house had about $70,000 to $80,000 in damage, and all of the family’s belongings are ruined.
“I was just disgusted because I know she was happy,” said the victim’s sister. “She was happy, and she worked really hard.”
The victim, who asked not to be identified, is a single mother who works full-time and goes to school part-time. Wednesday night would have been her first night of classes.
The people at Habitat for Humanity say they’re working with the insurance company right now, and they believe the victim will be able to rebuild the house in the same place. They say anyone wanting to help in that rebuilding should contact them.
In the meantime, this family has family to stay with, but Habitat for Humanity is working to get them a more permanent place to stay.
