KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Janis Moore lives on Indian Creek near 101st Street and Wornall Road in Kansas City, Mo. When she woke up, her backyard was under water.

“Yeah, well, they warned us. Watch out for flooding. And I’m watching out and it’s flooding. That really did happen,” she said.

Moore said this is not the first, second or even third time they’ve had flooding while living here. So every big rainfall, she knows what to expect.

“It can be kind of frustrating, you’re trying to think of what do I need to do? Do I need to leave? Maybe we should wait it out.”

On Friday, she and her family didn’t have a choice.

“I went out and started drinking my coffee and then the firemen were knocking on the door and they were like we’re advising everyone to evacuate,” Moore said.

Moore said her husband told firefighters they didn’t want to leave.

“Well, all of the sudden, they were like NO you’re not waiting it out. Everyone that’s in here get ready to go.”

That was around 9 a.m. on Friday. Three-and-a-half hours later, Moore was allowed back home. By then, the water had gone down.

After experiencing more than five floods and evacuations as a result, Moore said she knows she’s crazy for staying.

“People ask me ‘Why do you stay here?’ It’s like this is such a beautiful area. I love my home.”

In fact, she thinks the flooding, and the excitement that comes with it, is kind of cool.

“Can you believe it? It’s awesome,” she said.
