KANSAS CITY, Mo. — High winds and a storm Sunday morning caused a tree to crash down on a home at 42nd and Bell Street in Kansas City. Fox Four’s Megan Dillard spoke with a woman who surveyed the damage as she was walking her dog.
Susan Herold was inside her home during the storm, but came outside to find a tree on top of a neighbor’s home, several blocks away.
“It was pretty high winds. I noticed at one point the rain seemed to be coming pretty much horizontal into the windows so it was pretty heavy,” said Herold.
Herold says it can become a problem when people don’t monitor their trees.
“It’s very dangerous. And if this had been that way, it could’ve dropped on somebody who was driving down the street, a parked car,” she said.
She described what she called “something wrong” with the tree.
“It’s pretty dry up there. It’s got some like rot maybe. I think it’s important for people to be aware that those trees can be a danger to them, and also they’re sort of their responsibility even though the city planted them,” said Herold.
Herold believes tree maintenance takes precedence over lawn care.
“I think it’s probably more important in the long run because if you don’t prune them properly, if you don’t get the lower side branches as they’re growing, it weakens the tree, the way this one was,” she said. “It’s just important for people to come outside and look and their trees and see what condition they’re in.”
A neighbor told us the woman and her fiancé who live in the damaged home were not home Sunday afternoon.
